Start or renew a consistent life-changing meditation practice SIMPLY
I'm sharing tried and tested simple things. New year new you vibe.
I’m flying into your inbox on the slip stream of energy of the New year and a new you vibe that’s always in the air at this time of year. I’m bring you some practical and helpful meditation inspiration. This will move you out of any stagnation about it (coz that happens in life) and allows you to flow with your intention to create or renew your meditation practice if that is what you would like for 2025.
Meditation is one of my favourite things, if you could call it a thing.
Watching people create a meditation practice and seeing them shift and change towards experiences they want to have, connecting deeper with themselves and opening to their spiritual energy is one of the most beautiful experiences I have had in my life.
Meditation truly is a practice that no matter whether you think you are “doing it right”or “don't know what’s going on “ or you have a current belief that you are not a meditator, meditation will have an effect on you for the better. It is that guaranteed.
So, if you are considering starting, or you’d like a boost to your current meditation practice or you’d like to be more consistent, then this email could be super helpful to you. If it’s not your thing then we can say goodbye here or if you need a reason to start meditating have a read of the next paragraph.
One of main reasons why I love talking about meditation is, it’s a gateway to Everything. A gateway to more of all of you and a gateway to higher realms, dimensions and spaces. If we are only using the external world around us to cultivate our reality we will become very confused. A daily practice of inner cultivation will steady you and guide you even when you don’t realise it. Trying to meet the many challenges and experiences of life without an anchor is very hard. You will use so much energy to work your way through the things that are happening around you, there will be little left for things you love or what you actually want to do. The other option is you will glide along the surface of life doing the same things that perhaps don’t get you the feelings you want. 2025 is going to be a powerful year so setting yourself up with an anchor and inner guidance can change the course of things for us all. It has been the catalyst that is transforming my life. Now I know why I got the first message to meditate when I moved to Australia from England in 2005.
Soon after I moved here I would keep hearing this message about meditating, that I needed to start meditating. At the time I didn’t consider it something that I did or knew how to do. I started to read books about it, getting books from the library and generally thinking a lot about how to do it and just trying to work out where to begin with this unknown practice. Until one day the voice said get a cushion, sit down and close your eyes. It was a simple clear request. There was no thinking that was going to help me anymore, it was time to begin, in the end the experience itself guided me. That is the beauty of meditation; it will be the vehicle that will offer you guidance. So, there I was in the living room and my meditation practice began. This one moment and acting on it now stands on the landscape of my life as a pivotal moment. It is as simple as that so we are going to let go of any complications now.
You too could start this way or if you really want to make it a practice to fall in love with this email (and the ones to follow) are written for you. It will bring you back to the simple way of starting a meditation practice, to create the direct line between you now and you meditating daily, connecting deeper with yourself and shifting your life accordingly.
Over many years and many teachings, many practices still come down to simple things and I want to share them with you so you can start or boost your own meditation practice.
The first simple thing.
…is that we make all the decisions about your practice at once. Like now. We will do it together here and these below are the questions that you are going to ask yourself. It is super practical this first bit and really helps to set the ground and foundations for the mighty creation that is to come. We wanna get all of the decisions made because your mind will want to change those decisions daily or come up with ideas about why later and not now because your subconscious mind wants to stay the same, it doesn’t want you meditating, then it will become challenged and have to change.
However, right now we can override this resistance by simply having a structure of what your practice will look like each day. The magic of this is that each day there are no decisions to be made, your meditation becomes inextricably woven into the fabric and rhythm of your day, simply the thing you do at the same time each day. We start simple, approachable, doable and lovingly firm.
So here are the questions for you…
Where are you going to meditate?
We need a place to meditate. It needs to be the same place each day if we want to be consistent and for it to happen and be effective. Meditation works well in nooks or small spaces, corners of rooms or the small study. It likes containment and stillness ideally not where others are sleeping, not in areas that are walk ways, that kinda thing. Set up a space that’s going to be all yours, your little temple space, put all your equipment there (more on equipment in another email), make it delightful, uncluttered and clean.
If you do not have the ability to move much in your world and need to meditate lying down or in bed for example, have a different special meditation blanket or pillow or a different spot in the room to lie down or sit in for meditation. This small change will make a difference to your experience.
You may need to play around with a few different spaces before you get the right one. Choose it and write it down.
What time of day are you going to meditate?
Choosing what time of day you will meditate is so important for your mighty life-changing practice to be effective. Initially before you are at the stage of rearranging your life to make space for meditation (which does happen!) you need it to happen at a time that you can feasibly attend to it each day. Ideally in the morning before anyone gets up is the traditional time, but you know what’s happening in your life and what time is going to be the optimal time for you to let go. Choose the time. Write it down.
How long will you meditate for?
You may think this is an odd question however, starting as we mean to go on really helps me with motivation, confidence and encouragement. Start with a time that's doable, 10 mins perhaps. Once that feels established you can slowly increase the time up to 20 mins minimum eventually. 20 mins of meditation a day will start to be really impactful to you and your life. It truly is, in the broader view of a day, such a small amount of time, it is so worth giving that to yourself in all the ways you can. Choose your time lovingly and commit. Write it down.
All of these decisions are prepping the soil for you. You attending to these questions will change you. You writing what you want down next to these questions will help you. Take some time this week to make these three decisions that will impact you in wonderful ways.
Then you get to do something fun.
Start playing with creating your space.
If you spend time each day creating and tending to your space; your temple, you are already half way there, your energy will be there, your intention will be there and your focus will be there. When it comes to begin meditating you will have already started. I have in the past made a laundry space beautiful, it was all the space I had to meditate and I loved it! I have heard of cupboards under the stairs, walk-in-robes and many junk room transformations. It’s fun what can happen.
I will write in more detail in another email about creating your space because it is so important… but for now you can play. Make it delightful, make it exactly as you’d like it, it’s all yours, keep it simple and somewhere you want to be. Go sit there. Bring it offerings if you like.
I will be back later this week with more meditation inspiration. By the end of January you can have a meditation practice running consistently in your life and shifting your life accordingly.
I hope this was helpful to you.
Many blessings for your new or renewed practice you won’t regret having the experience.
Happy new year to you.
Helena
PS. And a favourite practice that I received for the New year is to answer the question What are my priorities? And making sure that my energy is working towards those and not away from those this year.
